In every business you need a method to keep people coming back. For some it is as simple as the necessity to eat and therefore purchase food from a local market. For others such as the retail dive shop, fighting for the "excess household income" is a much greater challenge.

For many years the dive industry has been stagnant and lacking any significant growth. Many remedies have been tried such as store sales, free instruction, free air fills, discount travel, dive clubs… all with limited success. But rest assured that we are not alone in our challenge.

Some 15 years ago the ski industry went through the same transition as us now. Skiing was a great seasonal past time. Many people enjoyed the sport but could only buy so much per season as the products life expectancy was several years, such as with dive gear. They tried in store sales, free lift tickets and discount travel but again it was with limited success. Then someone came up with the bright idea to get the whole family involved by producing skis, boots and clothing for young growing children. Now it was a sport for the whole family. Not just mom, dad and the older kids but children from 3 years upward.

Now, instead of one or two people entering the shop it was a whole family. The little ones always need the next size up, while the older kids could also use some new boots and a longer pair of skis or pants and what the heck while we are here mom and dad might as well get new outfits too before the vacation. It was a revolution to the industry that has led to loyal future clients. Today these children have grown but are now bringing their own children back to the same shops. I’m one of many such customers.
